Expedition/Trek
in the Cordilliera Blanca
Pisco
5760m and Chopicalqui 6345m
June, 2008
The Cordilliera Blanca in Peru offers some of the worlds best climbing.
Only a few hours drive by bus from Huaraz, a city with a population
of almost 60000, it is very accessible. This is a great introductory
mountaineering trip to the high mountains of the world and offers
the right mix to acclimatize well and have the opportunity to climb
some of Peru’s most beautiful mountains. Pisco and Chopicalqui
are not extreme climbing peaks, however, good physical fitness and
moderate ice experience are imperative. The weather in spring (June)
is usually very stable. Temperatures even at high elevation are
similar to the European Alps – they usually never drop much
below freezing and during the day one can frequently be climbing
above 15000ft in short sleeves. For a first time experience at high
altitude this is the perfect place!
Itinerary:
Day 1: Fly into Lima late in the evening and transfer to hotel.
Accomodations
Day 2: Catch an early bus to Cusco - City tour of this important
city in Inca culture. Accomodations
Day 3: Take the train to Agua Calientes and visit the City of Ollantaytambo
with its interesting irrigation system and rosè stone. Accomodations
in Agua Calientes.
Day 4: Take the bus up to Macchu Picchu and visit the Inca ruins
which is considered part of the Unesco historic world treasure.
Very rich flora and fauna combined with the spectacular incan archeology
make this an unforgettable experience. This is a very long day and
we will spend the night in Cusco again. Macchu Picchu is located
at an elevation of over 3000m so these days serve as good acclimatization
for the rest of the climbing trip.
Day 6: Long travel day from Cusco over Lima to Huaraz. Accomodations.
Day 8: Rest day in Huaraz. Organize for our trek and climb.
Day 9: Bus to the trailhead and trek up to basecamp(4100m). Camping
in tents. Luciano will be our fantastic peruvian cook!

its neighboring peaks, is a great way to experience the spectacular
Andes mountains. We will climb the technically not difficult standard
route. The extreme altitude and cold weather make Aconcagua a mountaineering
experience not to be underestimated. Good acclimatization is fundamental
